Fire Safety Week & Maelie's Birthday
Every Fall, usually in October. I do a unit on Fire Safety. It's a good way to teach children how to be prepared in case of a fire. I asked my Husband, Jayson to come and give the girls a talk about Fire Safety, and what it's like to be a fireman. My Husband is not around often as he's in the Navy but when he's not out at sea he works at the local Fire Dept. on the island here. He happens to be here for a bit and was really quite excited to come and talk to the kids. The kids were so excited. Today was also Maelie's birthday! She was extra happy to have a fireman visit on her birthday! I settled the kids in quickly as the fireman had already parked his truck out front and was waiting at the door to be introduced.
He came in and explained to the girls about 'stop, drop and roll' what they should do if there is a fire, how to test if there is a fire on the other side of the door. He was very patient and so kind with the girls, as they had so many questions for him.
He also explained to the kids about the fire extinguisher and the fire alarm we have installed at school. Giving them gentle reminders to never pull it unless there is a real fire. That when they do the firemen will all come and that if they would like him to visit again, he would gladly come and for me just call the Fire House.

After we learned about the alarm and the extinguisher we headed outside to check out the Fire Engine!

Mr. Jayson taught us so much about the Fire Engine and showed us where the the ladder goes and the hose for the water. His radio went off in the truck and they had to head out to a small grass fire on the island. Before he left he made sure to hang out fire hats to all the kids. Junior Firefighters! So we snapped a few pictures of him driving away! He was so wonderful, we hope to have him back again!

After all of the excitement of the fireman it was time to go back up to the house and have some birthday cake! Time to celebrate Maelie's birthday!

We had a wonderful day at school and a lovely party for Maelie!
